The Metchosin Fire Department held it’s 25th annual Fire and Life Safety Expo which brought nearly 1,000 elementary students to connect with first responders and community partner agencies from around the West Shore.
Before students arrived on the first day, April 16, a ceremony was held to officially rename the event after Lance Caven, a Langford Fire Rescue assistant chief who died after a battle with work-related cancer in 2023.
“He brought the fun in doing this event. He was always one that would laugh and the kids’ would have a great time with him,” said the long-time event coordinator and 911 dispatcher Tammy Yhde-Riis in a news release.
Students rotated between different stations that featured safety discussions and demonstrations from Langford, Metchosin, Colwood, Sooke, and Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt fire departments, as well as Langford Bylaw, FireSmart B.C., and West Shore RCMP.
“You can see in one room several different departments or agencies involved, and it’s for the greater good. And the passion from all these different agencies is shown here. It’s our ability to get out and think outside of our individual agencies and how can we really do what’s best for the community as a whole,” noted Metchosin fire chief Stephanie Dunlop in the release.
