Musical weekend
at UVic’s Young hall
Classical music of the vocal and instrumental kinds is on tap at the University of Victoria’s Philip T. Young recital hall this weekend.
Friday’s (Feb. 18) faculty of music concert is a voice department showcase, with orchestra dirtected by Benjamin Butterfield.
Selections include Schumann’s Song Cycle Fraunliebe und leben for eight female voices. Admission is by donation.
On Saturday, faculty members Pamela Highbaugh Aloni on cello, and pianist Bruce Vogt perform A Paris Connection: Sonatas for Cello and Piano by Frederic Chopin (1846), Claude Debussy (1915) and Francis Poulenc (1948).
Tickets are $17.50. Both concerts start at 8 p.m.
Williams collection pieces on display
When Michael C. Williams passed away in 2000, he bequeathed his collection of more than 1,000 paintings, sculptures and antiques to the University of Victoria.
Some of those items, including the largest and rarest of the Williams collection, are on display at the Legacy Art Gallery this week as its last exhibition before it closes for renovations until May.
Out of the Vault features works by by Glenn E. Howarth, Charles Malinsky, Noah Becker, Phyllis Serota, Rus Kim, Ari Kattan, Duane Pasco and Norval Morrisseau.
The exhibition runs until Sunday (Feb. 20) at UVic’s Legacy Gallery, 630 Yates St.
