WestJet is expanding into Campbell River by introducing direct seasonal flights from Campbell River to Calgary in the spring.
In a joint announcement with the City of Campbell River on Monday morning (Feb. 9), the airline announced the company would be offering flights from Campbell River’s airport to Calgary International Airport starting in mid-May.
The flights will begin on May 15, according to the airline, with flights operating between May and October, four days a week, except from June 22 to Sept. 6, when flights will operate daily.
“This seasonal service from WestJet delivers new, local options for leisure travellers, resource-sector workers and other business travellers on their way to destinations across North America and beyond,” said Dennis Brodie, the airport’s manager. “We also know that this area is highly attractive to both domestic and international visitors, and we’re pleased to offer more options to bring them directly to Campbell River and North Island.”
WestJet is the second airline to announce new seasonal flights to Campbell River. Last fall, Harbour Air said it was adding Campbell River as a destination to its flight schedule, along with several new locations departing from Vancouver.
Beginning next summer, on July 6, Harbour Air will offer daily flights from downtown Vancouver to Campbell River, giving direct access to the region’s premier fishing and wilderness adventures.
During Monday’s announcement, Campbell River Coun. Sean Smyth said 2025 was Campbell River’s largest tourism year.
“It’s just going to grow from there,” Smyth told the large group that had gathered at the airport for the news. “People want to be in Campbell River. They want their businesses in Campbell River.”
Smyth also thanked both the Wei Wai Kum and We Wai Kai First Nation chiefs, Chris Roberts and Ronnie Chickite, who were both present at the announcement. A traditional indigenous dance ceremony was held before the announcement.
“(The Nations) see the airport as important in their growth, and with them as part of our community, our potential is so much stronger,” Smyth said.
“This announcement is more than just a route expansion; it is about building bridges, creating opportunities and delivering on our promise of connecting Canadians to where they want to go. Campbell River’s unparalleled wildlife, geography and culture make this a world-class destination, which is now unlocked as a single-stop destination from more than 100 destinations served by our global hub in Calgary,” said Chris White-DeVries, WestJet senior manager.
To celebrate the expansion, a social media contest will be launched from Feb. 10 to Feb. 28, offering a chance to win two return tickets from Campbell River to Calgary. To enter, follow the Campbell River Airport Facebook page and like and share the contest post by tagging a friend.
