Langford's Posh Coat is growing around Greater Victoria.

A relatively new arrival on the Victoria music scene is making waves with their joyful, honest sound.

Posh Coat is a dynamic trio from Langford, made up of Andrew Whitney (guitar and vocals), Tricia True (bass and vocals), and Luke Hanna (drums) and, together, they’ve taken the Island by storm.

“We played together in high school before COVID-19 and then, about two years ago, a buddy of ours approached me and said that he’d like to have a house concert,” said Whitney. “I got Trisha and Luke, and I wrote a few songs and in June, two years ago, we played his house.”

That gig was the beginning and Whitney recalled how the band played for more than an hour and found that the experience was “too much fun not to pursue”.

Something that set the group apart right from those early days is that the band played their original music, something that they’ve continued to do since then.

“We play a lot of originals and I think that’s the way music should be. Playing covers is fine, but music has always been about originality and new ideas,” Whitney said.

And as is the case with a lot of original artists, Posh Coat’s music doesn’t fit neatly into a particular category.

“I guess the overarching genre is indie rock, but we put a lot of blues into our live shows,” said True. “We also do some beachy music, not really surf rock but inspired by the sound, as well as some pop rock sort of songs.”

The group currently has four of their original songs released on various streaming apps and are on the cusp of releasing a fifth. And the blues sound that True mentioned, she promises that future releases will “have a lot more of that”.

All the band’s musical releases are recorded at Whitney’s home studio and mixed and mastered in Victoria by their friend, Ben Erikson.

The formula seems to be working as the band played the Canada Day main stage in Victoria – their biggest show to date – and have been getting an increasing number of bookings around in Victoria and beyond.

In July, they’ll be featured as the ZONE band of the month and in August, they will be appearing at the Phillips Backyard Festival.

“You have to come and see us live,” said Whitney. “We love putting on a show and our live shows are a lot different than our recordings. The energy of the audience really adds to the sound.”

“We have some other big shows lined up as well and we’d really love to tour in the future,” said True.'“We’re really excited to see where we go from here. We’re a bit of a rag-tag group, but I think that makes us better in every way."
