A driver who allegedly posted video on social media of themselves going more than 100km/h over the speed limit on the Pat Bay Highway has been arrested.
The video of the green Mercedes allegedly racing to speeds up to 219 km/h was posted on June 9 and it showed the car weaving in and out of traffic, along with passing other vehicles on the highway's shoulder, Saanich police said on Monday.
A 24-year-old Saanich man who was allegedly driving the vehicle has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, driving without a valid licence and driving while using an electronic device. The man is scheduled to appear in court in July.
Saanich police Chief Dean Duthie called the driver's alleged actions dangerous and reckless.
"Lives of other motorists and road users were put at a heightened and unnecessary level of risk," he said in a June 17 statement. "Behaviour like this will not be tolerated on our roads."
Saanich police added that the vehicle's owner, who was not the driver during the alleged incident, has come forward and is cooperating with the investigation.
