Saanich announces month-long closure of section of Shelbourne

Road to be closed between North Dairy and Cedar Hill Cross Road for most of July

This section of Shelbourne is slated to be closed as the district works to complete a multi-year infrastructure project

Disruptions from the long-running Shelbourne Street Improvements Project are set to continue this summer, with road closures ahead.

In an announcement on Thursday (June 13), the district says closures will run until the end of July, affecting the stretch of Shelbourne between North Dairy Road and Cedar Hill Cross Road.

Starting on June 18, the district will first shut just the southbound lane. Then on July 2, both north and southbound lanes will be closed. The closures will be in effect 24 hours a day and the road is scheduled to reopen on Aug. 1.

The district says cars will have access to businesses and personal residences, while pedestrians and cyclists will still have access through the closed area, though at times that may only be on one side of the road.

The work being done on this section of Shelbourne includes installing bike lanes and new traffic signals, replacing underground utilities and rebuilding the road surface.

"Many of improvements include upgrades to the vital underground utilities along Shelbourne, ensuring they continue to function safely and reliably far into the future," a statement from the district says. "This work is complex and requires significant time to complete."
