Victoria opens expanded Gorge waterway swimming dock

Just in time for summer

The new swimming dock at Banfield Park was getting plenty of use on Friday (June 21) afternoon as summer officially begins with some warm weekend weather

Victoria is opening an expanded dock in the Gorge waterway with triple the amount of dock space and new swimming platforms. All just in time for the start of summer and for warmer temperatures to swoop into the region.

“The dock at Banfield Park is one of the most popular spots in Victoria to swim and paddle year-round,” Derrick Newman of the city's parks department said in a news release. “The expanded dock increases access to the Gorge Waterway and will give people more room to stay active and safely enjoy this special part of Victoria’s waterfront.”

The previous dock was installed in 2022, and this new add-on provides a new floating swim platform and more water safety features. The city also replaced the gangway connecting the dock to the shoreline, adding new swim steps for easier access in and out of the water.

There is also a new life-jacket loaner station for children and anchored buoys to mark the boundary to the recreational swimming area in Gorge Marine Park.

This project cost the city roughly $300,000 and had to go through a detailed review by the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans and Transport Canada.
